Soul music is barmitzvah music

And I mean that in a good way! I just bought Take Me To The River: A Southern Soul Story 1961-1977,  a 3-CD compilation. Once I put it on, I was unexpectedly transported back to  Saturday night, Harare (then Salisbury), Zimbabwe (then Rhodesia) sometime around 1966-67 – the golden age of barmitzvah parties in my case. Southern soul. Especially the slow dance numbers.

LN walked in while I was writing this and we danced to Otis Redding who was urging somebody, maybe us, to try a little tenderness. I guess at barmitvahs in New Jersey they were dancing to the same sublime music.
